    The Curricular Unit of Theory and Critic of Design introduces students to some of the main theories and authors in the field of design and related fields, focused on stimulating the development of a critical view of the activity and society, in an integrated and participatory way. In this sense, it aims to promote, together with other disciplines of the course, a theoretical basis for the development of the activity of Design in contemporary society, in a holistic and transdisciplinary way.

    1. Good and Bad Design: definitions, criticisms, authors, design and philosophy; 2. Everyone is a Designer. Are they all Designers? Design Knowledge; 3. Design Context: Scale and Economy; 4. Design and Future: possible relationships between science fiction and design; 5. Communicating beyond barriers: linguistics, semiology, rhetoric, and empathy; 6. Iterative processes, cognitive noise, visual thinking, language as structure; 7. Connecting signals: Cartesian thinking versus non-linear thinking, clustering and the Eureka moment; 8. Design Thinking: Design beyond Design; 9. Design & Critical Thinking;
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    The main objective of the discipline is to develop the students’ ability to think critically about design and learn to see design critically. At the end of the semester, students must: Have a basic knowledge of the main concepts and areas of knowledge related to Design; To be able to explore and express themselves critically about the fields of knowledge directly and indirectly related to the area of competence of contemporary Design; Understand the breadth, complexity, implications and risks of the practice of Design in contemporary society.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
    The discipline is based on: Reading and discussion of texts and videos; Discussion of the proposed topics with invited experts; Inverted classroom and problem-based learning, with the exploration of the proposed themes by students; Conducting research and seminars on the topics; Evaluation of exercises and participation, added to a process of critical self-evaluation of the results achieved individually and by the discipline.
