Seminar I

  Seminar I develops applied research skills in the fields of Architecture, Urban Design and Urbanism. It focuses on the identification and delimitation of a research problem, the development of the state of the art, the selection and comparative analysis of case studies, and the formulation of a grounded critical interpretation. The Urban Rehabilitation Area of Portimão Historic Centre constitutes the common territorial reference, allowing the knowledge produced to be related to contemporary issues concerning the transformation of the built and urban environment. Seminar I is the first stage of a pathway articulated with Seminar II, in which the acquired knowledge will support the development of an original authorial proposal structured as a scientific article.

  1. Research problem and state of the art Definition of the research problem, question, objectives and scale of analysis. Research, selection and critical assessment of scientific, academic, technical and institutional sources. 2. Case studies and comparative analysis Selection of 3 to 5 case studies, preferably from European and Mediterranean contexts. Definition of comparative criteria and analysis of results, potentialities, limitations and constraints. 3. Critical interpretation and synthesis Development of an independent critical interpretation, lessons learned and grounded conclusions. 4. Exploratory application to Portimão Relationship between the knowledge produced and the Urban Rehabilitation Area of Portimão Historic Centre, leading to an exploratory scenario for the territory.
• ObjectivosObjectives

  By the end of the curricular unit, students should be able to identify and delimit a research problem in Architecture, Urban Design or Urbanism; formulate an appropriate research question; search, select and critically assess scientific, academic, technical and institutional sources; develop a state of the art; select and compare case studies according to explicit criteria; interpret results, potentialities and limitations; formulate independent and grounded conclusions; relate the knowledge produced to the Urban Rehabilitation Area of Portimão Historic Centre; propose an exploratory scenario for application to the territory; and communicate and defend the research with scientific, graphic, written and oral rigour, while respecting academic integrity and correct referencing.

• MetodologiaMethodology

  The curricular unit adopts a research-based learning approach focused on the progressive development of a problem applied to a real territory. It combines bibliographic and documentary research, comparative case-study analysis, critical discussion, individual supervision and intermediate presentations with formative assessment. Progress checkpoints are used to monitor research development and foster autonomy and critical reflection. Sessions with researchers, specialists and partner organisations may also be held within the CITAI-DATA framework, together with the critical, transparent and responsible use of digital and Generative AI tools.
