Statistics I

Business Management
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The growing availability of data in organizations has made the ability to collect, analyse and interpret data an essential competence for professionals in business management. This course unit introduces the fundamental concepts of Statistics applied to business contexts, addressing methods for data collection, questionnaire design and measurement scales, as well as techniques for organizing, describing and analysing data. Methods of univariate and bivariate descriptive statistics are presented, together with techniques for analysing relationships between variables, including linear correlation and simple and multiple linear regression models, which are widely used to understand business phenomena such as organizational performance, consumer behaviour, productivity and financial outcomes. The course has a theoretical-practical orientation, emphasizing the analysis of real data using statistical software, namely jamovi.
  • ProgramaProgramme
S1 - Introduction to statistics S2 - Data collection and questionnaire design S3 - Reliability of measurement scales S4 - Univariate descriptive statistics S5 - Bivariate descriptive statistics S6 - Linear correlation S7 - Simple linear regression S8 - Multiple linear regression S9 - Data analysis using statistical software
  • ObjectivosObjectives
LO1 - Understand the fundamental concepts of statistics and the role of data analysis in business decision-making. LO2 - Identify types of variables and appropriate data collection methods in organizational contexts. LO3 - Design data collection instruments, namely questionnaires and measurement scales. LO4 - Assess the internal consistency of scales using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. LO5 - Organize and summarize data using tables, graphical representations and descriptive statistical measures. LO6 - Analyse relationships between variables using linear correlation. LO7 - Build and interpret simple and multiple linear regression models. LO8 - Use statistical software (jamovi) for data analysis and interpretation.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
The teaching methodology includes: TM1 - expository method to present the theoretical concepts. TM2 - demonstrative method to illustrate the application of statistical methods to business cases. TM3 - active method involving problem solving and data analysis using statistical software.   Knowledge assessment is done through continuous assessment or a written final exam. Continuous assessment includes: Written test - 40% Group project (empirical study involving data collection and statistical analysis, with oral presentation) - 40% Exercises and quizzes on Moodle - 20%
