Awareness Session: From School to an Inclusive Society

April 24, 2026

Objetivos de Desenvoltimento Sustentável (ODS)

The promotion of Portuguese Sign Language and the removal of barriers are fundamental to combating social isolation.

The construction of an inclusive society presupposes the acceptance of human diversity, with the goal of understanding, recognizing, and offering equal opportunities for all people through the elimination of barriers and the celebration of differences and human value.

This process involves changes in educational practices, the dissemination of legislation, and awareness at the educational, organizational, and political levels.

In Portugal, it is estimated that approximately 120,000 people have some degree of hearing loss, and 30,000 communicate through Portuguese Sign Language (LGP). These data reveal that, despite being a minority community, gestural communication is used to promote preventive measures in the fight against social exclusion and isolation. Although the vast majority of deaf people use this language, several challenges are still observed.

Currently, the presence of Portuguese Sign Language Interpreters is required in more services and across society, as is the guarantee of more opportunities and accessibility for this public. Challenges prevail, but together, we can move toward the elimination of these barriers in daily life.
