Professors Américo Mateus and Susana Leonor presented biodesign and biomaterial solutions that position the Algarve as a pioneer in the blue bioeconomy.
On 4 May, the Museu de Portimão hosted the Alga-FIX conference, an initiative organised by the Municipalities of Portimão and Lagoa dedicated to reflecting on the challenges and opportunities associated with invasive algae species in the Algarve region.
The event brought together researchers, specialists and local stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions linked to sustainability, circular economy and the valorisation of coastal natural resources.
During the conference, Professors Américo Mateus and Susana Leonor presented the results of studies and experiments developed within GREEN BIOLAB and CITAI-FABXR, exploring the potential of invasive algae as raw material for the creation of biomaterials, bioplastics, bioceramics and biodesign products.
The presentation also highlighted the work carried out within the European projects COCOON and BiomaterialKIT, as well as the international experience of the BIP Speculative & Performative Design for BioFutures with Algae, developed in collaboration with European institutions such as Aalto University, Howest University and Izmir IEU. This reinforced the international dimension of biodesign research carried out at ISMAT.
The session reinforced the vision of ISMAT and the Living Design Academy in building a new ecocentric approach to design, where nature, technology and creativity work in an integrated way.
Through applied research, advanced training in Design for Circular Economy and Biodesign, and connection to European innovation networks, the Algarve is beginning to position itself as a pioneering territory in the blue bioeconomy and in the creation of new sustainable industries with a positive impact on the environment, society and the regional economy.
