The BIOMATERIAL KIT project concluded in a remarkable way, with the delivery of two mobile labs and educational kits to schools in the municipality of Portimão. The initiative, part of the Twinintown Project, involved a partnership between the Municipality of Portimão, the Municipality of Bayraklı, the Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes (ISMAT), and İzmir University of Economics.
The Bemposta and Poeta António Aleixo Secondary Schools were chosen as pilot schools to receive the laboratories and teaching materials, developed based on research conducted by the partner universities. This material enables the integration of concepts of circularity, sustainability, and regeneration into lessons, empowering students to create innovative solutions for the use of organic waste in the production of biomaterials.
The equipment delivery event was attended by:
- "Teresa Mendes, Vice-President of the Portimão City Council.
- The coordinating team of the project, represented by Filipe Bally and Arminda Duarte.
- ISMAT, represented by the Director Professor Rui Loureiro and the researchers Professor Susana Leonor, Professor Américo Mateus, and Professor David Palma.
- The school principals, Professor Sandra Tenil (Bemposta) and Professor Telmo Soares (Poeta António Aleixo).
- And students from various classes who participated in the project.
A special thanks was addressed to the school community of the two school clusters, particularly to the teachers Ana Mariano and Mónica Silva, who guided the students in the development and implementation of the creative solutions. This collective effort from the students was essential for the design and adaptation of the equipment to the needs of the schools.
The BIOMATERIAL KIT leaves an important legacy for teaching sustainable and innovative practices, highlighting the potential of education in promoting a more responsible future aligned with the principles of the circular economy. This milestone reinforces the importance of collaboration between municipalities, universities, and schools to turn challenges into educational and environmental opportunities.
