From 22 to 25 October, the XXVII Congress of the Portuguese Statistical Society (SPE 2025) took place in the Algarve, one of the most important national scientific meetings in the field of Statistics.
ISMAT was represented by Professor Sílvia Pedro, Director of the Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, who joined the Organising Committee of the event and presented the work entitled: “Distinguishing Repeat and First-Time Hotel Guests: A Comparative Analysis of Classification Models.”
The study, co-authored by Inês Gonçalves, a recent Master’s graduate from ISMAT, Professors Miguel Portugal and Tiago Candeias from ISMAT, and Professor Conceição Ribeiro from the University of the Algarve, highlights the role of Statistics and Machine Learning in understanding behavioral patterns and improving decision-making processes in the hospitality sector, reinforcing the importance of Data Science as a strategic area for innovation and evidence-based management.
