Reflection on the impact of work-related stress and strategies to protect mental health

On 7 November, an open class took place at the auditorium of Lusófona University of Cape Verde in Mindelo on the theme "Burnout Prevention – Burnout, the Public Enemy," held both in-person and online, led by Prof. Dr André Rodrigues, director of the Master’s in Work Psychology and Occupational Health at ISMAT.

Burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that arises as a result of chronic and prolonged stress related to the work environment. It occurs when professional demands consistently exceed an individual’s capacity to manage them. Situations such as high workload, strict deadlines, lack of autonomy in decision-making, constant pressure for results, and absence of recognition are factors that commonly trigger or intensify burnout.

Burnout prevention starts with self-awareness: listening to your body, respecting limits, and valuing small moments of well-being.

Taking care of mental health is as important as studying or working. Moments of relaxation, breathing exercises, and mindful breaks help reduce stress and maintain balance.
