Lecturer Sílvia Pedro, Director of the Bachelor's in Data Science at ISMAT, presented an innovative study on customer behaviour analysis in luxury hotels at the One-Day Meeting on Advanced Statistics Topics, held at Universidade de Aveiro on 7 February 2025.
The study, entitled "Statistical and Machine Learning Approaches for Customer Behaviour Analysis in Luxury Hotels", demonstrated the practical application of Data Science in the luxury tourism sector. The research focused on identifying patterns and classifying returning and first-time customers, using advanced techniques in Statistics and Machine Learning.
Student Inês Gonçalves, from the Master’s in Management and Innovation in Tourism and Hospitality at ISMAT, was a co-author of the study, alongside Professor Conceição Ribeiro (Universidade do Algarve) and Professor Tiago Candeias (Director of the Bachelor's in Computer Engineering at ISMAT).
The study highlights the importance of data analysis in the tourism sector, particularly in understanding customer behaviour in luxury services. This approach enables hotel managers to personalise experiences for returning customers, develop more effective loyalty strategies, and optimise services based on behavioural patterns.
The Bachelor's in Data Science at ISMAT prepares students to face challenges such as this in the job market. The course offers a solid education in Statistics and Computer Science, with a focus on business analysis (including Business Analytics and Tourism Analytics) and a multidisciplinary approach using Challenge Based Learning (CBL) methodology.
This study exemplifies how Data Science can be applied to generate significant value in sectors such as Tourism, demonstrating the relevance and potential of the education provided by ISMAT in this area, which is in increasing demand in the job market.
