Risks & Challenges Programme: Promoting Adaptation to Higher Education

04 August 2025

Undergraduate Psychology students at ISMAT take part in a life skills development programme.

The Riscos & Desafios Programme took place during March, April and May of the current year. It is a scientifically validated life skills development programme for first-year higher education students, incorporating influence strategies and skills development through an active and participatory methodology.

The programme consisted of 8 weekly sessions, each lasting 2 hours. The intervention was carried out with a group of fifteen first-year students from the Undergraduate Degree in Psychology.

The implementation of this programme aimed to achieve the following objectives:

  • Facilitate student adaptation and success within the context of higher education;
  • Promote the building of a social support network among students;
  • Encourage protective behaviours and prevent health risk behaviours;
  • Develop personal and interpersonal skills;
  • Promote the adoption of healthy lifestyles;
  • Reduce first-year dropout rates in higher education.

This activity was developed and delivered by the Institute for Addictive Behaviours and Dependencies, IP (ICAD), with Dr Ana Simão, within the scope of an ongoing collaboration between this institution and ISMAT.

Given the importance of the initiative and the satisfaction expressed by participants, the programme will continue in the next academic year and will be open to all first-year ISMAT students.
