Design Office III

Communication Design
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The curricular unit Design Office III deepens project development in Design, expanding and adding complexity to the methodologies and approaches introduced during the first year of the course. It proposes the implementation of a single six-month project, structured in clearly defined stages that establish commitments to deadlines and responsibilities through intermediate presentations. The process is supported by weekly personalised supervision, carried out in groups, fostering critical reflection and the continuous evolution of the work. The unit may also include lectures and workshops led by external guests, contributing to the enrichment of learning experiences and research developed within the context of the proposed project. In this way, Design Office III consolidates a student-centred pedagogical model, based on active, collaborative and experiential learning, preparing students for more autonomous and integrated design practices.
  • ProgramaProgramme
CP1 - Identification of contexts and social needs; CP2 - Design in multiple scales: object, product, furniture, space and city; CP3 - Visual thinking and formal exploration: drawing, sketches, models and mockups; CP4 - Modeling and prototyping: analog and digital tools (CNC, laser, 3D printing, Fusion 360, Rhino, SketchUp); CP5 - Visual communication and storytelling technologies: Adobe CC, interfaces, digital presentation; CP6 - Socially oriented design: participatory methodologies, co-design, impact and sustainability; CP7 - Presentation and critical validation of projects in an exhibition or public environment.
  • ObjectivosObjectives
At the end of the course the student should be able to: O1 - Identify and analyze sociocultural and territorial contexts to support design proposals with social relevance; O2 - Formulate design problems at different scales, from the hand scale to the urban scale, based on empirical observation and critical analysis; O3 - Explore formal and functional languages ¿¿suitable for products, systems and experiments, considering the relationship between user and environment; O4 - Apply technical and technological knowledge, from analogue to digital, in the representation and implementation of proposals; O5 - Develop design projects with social impact, supported by collaborative and participatory processes; O6 - Critically evaluate design solutions regarding their viability, cultural relevance and ability to generate value for local communities; O7 - Communicate ideas and proposals effectively through visual means, models, prototypes and digital presentation tools.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
An approach based on integrated design projects is privileged, using the Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology, which allows students to apply the syllabus content in simulated or real contexts of professional practice. The curricular unit also promotes the practice of design thinking, encouraging the creative resolution of complex problems and the generation of innovative solutions, from initial research to final delivery. By articulating technical, conceptual, and strategic skills, the development of communication design projects with a high degree of complexity is fostered, integrating the various phases of the process — research, ideation, prototyping, implementation, and presentation. This pedagogical approach values autonomy, critical thinking, and teamwork, promoting meaningful learning oriented towards the challenges of the contemporary professional market.
