Health and Physical Fitness

Sports Sciences
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The Health and Physical Fitness CU, considering a comprehensive perspective, is transversal to the three main areas of the Degree in Sports Science: School Physical Education, Sports Training, and Exercise and Health. Therefore, its focus is on physical assessment, as well as exercise prescription aimed at improving overall physical fitness, also considering the scope of exercise practice in relation to the existence of several chronic pathologies based on scientific evidence.
  • ProgramaProgramme
S 1: Benefits of regular physical activity for health and fitness.   S 2: Determinants and models of analysis and intervention leading to the adoption of healthy lifestyles.   S 3: Health screening and physical and/or functional assessment tests by age group.   S 4: Anthropometry: skinfold thickness, perimeters and circumferences.   S 5: Measurement of human energy consumption and metabolic calculations.   S 6: Assessment, prescription and monitoring of physical exercise practice according to special life stages (children, adults and the elderly) and cardiovascular, metabolic and autoimmune pathologies (diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia).
  • ObjectivosObjectives
This CU aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to:   LO 1. Recognize, in general, the importance of physical activity and, especially, physical exercise, for health from a preventive point of view, as well as some models used to motivate students to start and maintain this practice;   LO 2. Make effectively and safety intervention, strictly within their professional areas of expertise, in the field of physical and functional assessment, applying general and specific protocols according to several special conditions (pathologies) and special phases of life (children, adults and the elderly);   LO 3. Do planning, periodizing, and controlling the practice of physical exercise, considering international recommendations and the specific constraints of the participants.
