    The training of professionals in Sports Sciences assumes the acquisition of theoretical skills that allow them to articulate a variety of domains of inter and transdisciplinary experience. Regardless of the recognition of the autonomy and content of all Curricular Units of this disciplinary area, it is intended to contribute to develop new areas of academic interest, through the deepening of ideas, theories, paradigms and other concepts. On the other hand, the reflection about these topics supports the philosophical principle that all knowledge is dependent on historical, pedagogical and social factors, each of them varying on the circumstances, therefore, raising awareness that knowledge is constantly developing.

    The contents of the course are divided into the following eight themes: 1. Introduction to the Study of History and Sport. 2. Physical activities in antiquity. 3. The Humanist Movement and Physical Education: Cultural transformations in Renaissance Education. Rousseau naturalism. 4. Genesis of pedagogical thinking in Physical Education and Sport: The precursors in the European context and the different conceptions. Pedagogical thinking in Portugal and its influences. The evolution of physical practices within the framework of Portuguese society customs. 5. Nature, Scope and Principles of Systems: Educational and Sports: The problems of Physical Education and School Sports and the position of the Associative Movement of Profs. Of Physical Education. 6. The Modern Age Olympic Games and Coubertin ideas.
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    The CU deepens the understanding of the route used in the evolution of Sport and Physical Activities (origin, growth and development) over the past two centuries, popularizing their practices. This evolution has been influenced by the nature of social life, since the Human Being and the Society are not static, transforming life in a permanent movement of mutations and transcendences. For this purpose, its objectives are: 1.Get basic knowledge of the history of Physical Activity and Sport. 2. To understand the meaning of sociocultural influences verified over time. 3. To understand the historical dimension of the sports phenomenon as an agent of transformation of social reality. 4. To analyze sport within the social sciences as a social phenomenon. 5. To contribute to the enrichment of the sports culture in order to enhance the ability to approach and understand the sports phenomenon in a multidisciplinary perspective.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
    Theoretical classes are taught with documentary and audiovisual support. In practice, content analysis exercises are performed to bibliographic texts. Continuous assessment assumes: a) Frequency: to be held at the end of the semester. b) Portfolio: evaluation element related to student?s participation in the classes consisting of sheets (individual or group), selected texts (A.C.), and relevant articles, among others. At a minimum each student must comply with 50% of the work performed. c) Group / Individual Work: Students will have to present a written (original) work to be done on contributions considered relevant in the History and Sociology of Sport in Portugal: biographies, history of institutions and modalities, press analysis, among others. These will be presented orally, after elaboration of their schedule.
