    Intended learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences to be developed by the students): This UC aims to provide students with specific knowledge and skills on the Fashion Design History by addressing its various movements in the context of Fashion Design History.

     1. Contextualisation Design, History of Clothing and History of Fashion -Characteristics of clothing in different periods of history. Influence of the historical, cultural, socio-economic and artistic context on the way we dress.  -Open Society / Closed Society -Mechanisms of diffusion and contagion 2. 14th and 15th century -Relevance of the period for the History of Fashion Socio-cultural and aesthetic differences between the pre- and post-Middle Ages periods 3. 16th and 18th centuries - Fashion as a mechanism for constructing public image, power relations and class divisions.  4. 18th and 19th century -The French and Industrial Revolutions and their impact on fashion.  - Fashion and class. - Design, Fashion and Industrialisation.  5. 20th and 21st century - Haute Couture: Fashion, Desire and Social Stratification.  - Wars and Fashion. - The Century of Brands.  - Fashion and Image: how digital media have revolutionised the fashion image.  
  • ObjectivosObjectives
    The aim of this course is to introduce students to the history of fashion design, looking at its movements in the context of clothing and society. On completion, students should: Broaden their general knowledge of the History of Fashion Design, understanding the historical background and factors that have driven this activity; Understand the evolution of clothing from antiquity to the present day, identifying protagonists, movements, and socio-cultural impacts; Identify the main players in fashion design, recognising connections between design characteristics, creative thinking, and historical legacy; Distinguish historical references in national and international fashion and analyse the importance of images from the past in contemporary production; Develop critical thinking about social structures and their influence on the diffusion of fashion; Understand the changes in the concept of Design over time and its relevance to economic and cultural development.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
    Classes will be expository and participatory, accompanied whenever possible by visual content, both images and videos. Teacher/student interaction will be encouraged through debate, discussion in group dynamics, as this facilitates the assimilation of content. Students will be encouraged to deepen their knowledge by carrying out and presenting a research project. The History of Fashion Design course has a theoretical-practical nature, but with a strong focus on research, analysis and critical reflection. Assessment is continuous, based on the work carried out throughout the semester and participation in classes, with particular emphasis on the evolution of acquisitions throughout the teaching-learning process.
