    The History of Psychology course aims to introduce students to the main conceptual, philosophical and scientific milestones that contributed to the establishment of psychology as an autonomous discipline. Starting from its roots in philosophy and the natural sciences, the emergence of scientific psychology at the end of the 19th century is explored, as well as the evolution of the different currents and schools of thought. Throughout this course, students are encouraged to critically understand psychological methods and theories and their practical applications in various fields.

Psychology in Greek Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Modern Age. Foundations of a Psychological Science Bergson's contribution; Phrenology; Physiology; Psychophysics and Evolutionism Psychology as a Science The work of Weber, Fechner, Wundt and Ribot. Phenomenology and existentialist humanism. Psychology in the 20th century: the main schools: Reflexology; Behaviorism; Associationism; Structuralism; Functionalism; Gestalt; Psychoanalysis; Humanistic Psychology; Cognitive Psychology. Psychology today. Current areas of reflection, application and practice in psychology. Psychology in Portugal. The contribution of Portuguese thought. The background to the Faculties of Psychology and Educational Sciences. Research and scientific production: an example of Portuguese psychology journals

    The aim is to develop a historical and reflective vision that allows current knowledge of psychology to be situated in the broader history of ideas, promoting skills of analysis, debate and problematization that are fundamental to academic and professional training in psychology. The general objectives are:  1- Identify and describe the main historical milestones, authors and theoretical currents that contributed to the establishment of psychology as an autonomous science. 2- Critically analyze the relationship between the philosophical, social and scientific contexts and the development of the different schools of psychological thought. 3- Compare and discuss continuities and ruptures between classical and contemporary approaches, understanding their historical relevance. 4-Apply a historical perspective to interpret current problems in psychology, developing skills of reflection, argumentation and synthesis

    Diverse and innovative methodologies: - active methodologies, based on theoretical-practical classes, involving analysis, discussion, presentation of practical examples and experiential situations for reflection and debate; - always learning from an interdisciplinary perspective; - group work and oral presentations; - personal and professional development activities; - e-based learning (based on Moodle).
