ISMAT 2407

Project III

Architecture
  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
In the first semester (S1) of the 2nd year of UC Projeto, the work to be developed is intended to provide a solid base of knowledge to the students, following the approximations to this area made in the previous year, and strengthening their preparation and spirit for the following years. Education, and in particular the education of the future architect, is a tool for learning to see the world and transform it into a habitable thing. It is necessary to educate the student so that his individuality is a mental exercise, that results from systemic thinking and criticism. Each project has its specificity that is difficult to predict in teaching. However, it is possible to educate the thinking of young students and give them the tools and knowledge they will need to face the discipline’s challenges. We need to warn them of what we already know. Meanwhile, the Project shall be developed not on what is known, but on what to do with this knowledge.
  • ProgramaProgramme
The syllabus aims to achieve the proposed objectives, in the three listed moments – Investigate, Design, Communicate. They will correspond to theoretical lectures, with audiovisual support whenever justified, quick speculative exercises and a full practical work to be developed individually until the end of the semester. Both the theoretical lectures and the quick exercises will be part of the preparation for the development of the final work. They will seek to stimulate the creativity and reflection of the students, integrating an awareness of Knowing and Doing, which are always present in the primordial skills to be achieved. In parallel, the following auxiliary aspects will be addressed:   Fundamentals of technical drawing Introduction to the elementary materials of construction (concrete, steel, masonry, wood, glass…) Basic construction techniques and systems Design-build integration Notable Case Studies of Architecture
  • ObjectivosObjectives
The objectives of the UC are intended to be consistent with the expectations for the student’s perception of the built space development, and the drawing/project techniques of the first years. Students will be encouraged to confront preconceived ideas of any kind. The free critical spirit must be preserved and stimulated. Work will be done on the formation and exercise of consciousness in architectural design. The elementary notions of construction will always be present and will help the creative process. The student must develop attention, critical sense, and ease of expression, to understand himself and to make himself understood by others. He must cultivate an aesthetic feeling and an ethical sense of the profession. The main objective of the UC is the education of the architect. As generic objectives, we will have three moments in the work process:   Research (analyses and history) Project (strategy and construction) Communicate (representation and presentation)

  • MetodologiaMethodology
Knowledge created in the classroom shall be shared in open source. All the instruments inherent to the practice of architecture (free and technical drawing, models, etc.) will be used recurrently, and with the support of the teachers, applied according to the conventional criteria of representation. During the semester, and for the final presentations, the students will be asked to work, preferably, with fragments of three-dimensional physical models, on the scale of their creations. These models should be able to display the idea and the way of building, within the proposed spatial conditions. The models are the central element of the development and representation of the project, being complemented by research material, drawings, photography, and video. All material presented by the students shall be digitally collected and inserted into the UC Archive and made available through a shared and collaborative platform.
