Psychology of Deviant Behaviour

    This course aims to contribute to the reflection on the concepts of deviant behavior psychology, from a positive and constructive perspective. The main theoretical approaches to this topic will be addressed, namely the concepts of delinquency/crime and victimology, the different deviant trajectories, risk factors, protective factors, and the role of the psychologist in protecting children and youth at risk and preventing deviant behavior.

  • ObjectivosObjectives
    This course aims to enable students to acquire, consolidate, or maximize their knowledge, skills, and competencies in the areas of childhood, adolescence, deviant behavior, parenting, and child protection. The central objective of the Psychology of Deviant Behavior course is to convey fundamental theoretical information in the fields of deviant behavior, specifically the relevant aspects of: the concepts of delinquency/crime and victimology, risk factors and protective factors, and the different "deviant" trajectories. Students should be able to understand and problematize the concepts of deviant behavior and identify strategies that protect against deviant behavior and promote child protection.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
    The methodology applied in this UC in theoretical/practical classes: using the expository method and based on the analysis of texts/scientific articles, film excerpts/interviews, debate on the themes presented. Open classes (in-person and online) will be held with experts in the programmatic areas, as well as in-person visits to social intervention entities in the Algarve that work to prevent deviant behavior.  The curricular unit will be evaluated: through active participation in classes (- 10%); carrying out group work (50%);  A written test (40%). Group work will be carried out during practical classes with the guidance of the teacher. For continuous assessment, the student, during assessment moments, cannot have a significant discrepancy between the assessed components (test and group work).
