  • ApresentaçãoPresentation
The value of data is now recognized in numerous application areas and organizations are increasingly using it to support decision making. This Curricular Unit starts by introducing the introductory concepts of Statistics, followed by the presentation of various types of tables, graphs and descriptive measures that can be used to organize and characterize the data. Then the concept of probability is introduced and we proceed to Inferential Statistics, which aims to infer about the population, based on the knowledge of the sample data, including the point and interval estimation of parameters and testing hypotheses about these. The correlation between quantitative variables is also analyzed graphically and analytically and simple and multiple linear regression models are developed, which are very useful for predictive purposes. The software jamovi will be used.
  • ProgramaProgramme
S1. Introduction to statistics S2. Descriptive statistics S3. Probabilities and random variables S4. Parametric and non-parametric hypothesis tests S5. Correlation analysis S6. Simple and multiple linear regression S7. Use of jamovi.
  • ObjectivosObjectives
LO1 - Understand the basics of statistics. LO2 - Know the concept of variable and its classifications. LO3 - Identify the characteristics of a sample using descriptive statistics. LO4 - Distinguish concepts and solve problems involving probabilities and random variables. LO5 - Perform parametric and non-parametric hypothesis tests; LO6 - Know and apply techniques to analyze correlations between variables. LO7 - Adjust, evaluate performance and use for predictive purposes, linear regression models. LO8 - Analyse data with the support of the software jamovi.

  • MetodologiaMethodology
The teaching methodology includes the expository method (TM1) to present the contents, the demonstrative method (TM2) to illustrate its application to practical cases and the active method (TM3) to solve classroom exercises with and without the use of a computer, in a problem-based learning approach. The evaluation is made by continuous assessment or written exam. The continuous assessment consists of one written test (40%), a group work (40%) and exercise solving (20%).
